Early Signs of Heart Failure: Symptoms You Should Not Ignore

Heart failure does not mean the heart has stopped. It means the heart is not pumping or filling as effectively as the body needs. The condition can develop after high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, heart attack, valve disease, rhythm problems, cardiomyopathy, or other medical conditions.

Common symptoms include shortness of breath during activity, needing more pillows at night, waking up breathless, swelling of the feet or ankles, rapid weight gain from fluid, tiredness, reduced exercise tolerance, and persistent cough or wheeze. Symptoms may appear gradually, so people sometimes adapt without realizing their activity level has changed.

Why weight tracking helps

Daily weight can reveal fluid retention before swelling becomes obvious. A sudden increase over a few days should be discussed with a clinician, especially if breathlessness or swelling is also worsening. Patients already diagnosed with heart failure should follow their individualized action plan.

Treatment is better than ever

Modern heart failure care may include several medication classes, blood pressure control, rhythm management, valve treatment, cardiac rehabilitation, devices, and lifestyle adjustments. The exact plan depends on the type of heart failure and the underlying cause.

Urgent evaluation is needed for severe breathlessness, blue lips, fainting, chest pain, confusion, or inability to lie flat because of breathing. Early recognition and consistent follow-up can reduce hospitalizations and improve daily life.
